I based this drawing on a scene from the movie that I captured with my Snappy video capture card. This is from the scene were Duchess and O'malley are talking on the roof top of O'malley's pad after Scat Cat and his gang left. O'Malley was apoligizing for how corny his "eyes are like saphires" pick up line was, and here Duchess is answering, "Any girl would like it, even little Marie." I hadn't really planned on drawing this picture when I did. One of my friends came over and asked if I wanted to draw with him, just like we used to do in old times. I said sure and while he designed the next generation of stellar warships I sat down and drew this picture of Duchess.
With Paint Shop Pro I added digital effects to make my drawing look as close to the actual movie scene as possible. For the background gradients I sampled colors from the scene's screen capture and I added what I thought were the appropriate lighting effects to Duchess. If you ever watch this movie you'll see that I came pretty darn close!
The pencil work for this image was done on 80lb. medium surface Strathmore drawing paper. I used .05mm mechanical pencils loaded with 5H lead for the rough work and 2HB lead for the dark lines. I scanned, cleaned up, and shadowed the image with Paint Shop Pro 3. I then printed it on standard fax/ printer paper and colored the printed image with Crayola colored pencils. The colored drawing was scanned back into my computer. The digital gradients, lighting effects, and lettering were done in Paint Shop Pro 7.02. I hope you like the results of all of this hard work!
