Duchess

"Groovy Mama, Groovy!"

I had made an animated MNG file of Duchess dancing from about 70 screenshots or so, and decided it would be fun to draw her while she was dancing. This pose came from the scene where all the cats were at Thomas O'Malley's pad and Scat Cat was preforming the song "Ev'rybody Wants to be a Cat." When Duchess was dancing to the music one of her kittens said "Groovy Mama, groovy!" I am surprised the drawing turned out as well as it did. I got interupted several times while I was drawing it to do other things like shoveling mulch in the backyard to going bowling with my buddies.

Coloring it also presented a dilemma. In the screenshot Duchess had a red coloring because of the disco lighting of O'Malley's pad. I had to decide if I should color her grey and white like I usually did and add the red tint with Paint Shop Pro or if I should actually color her red with my colored pencils. Believe it or not, Ebay solved my problem! I ran across an Aristocats production cel from one of the dance scenes up for auction. In the cel Duchess and O'Malley were actually painted red and blue! Disney didn't use a red filter on the camera. So I decided to color Duchess red with my pencils.

This drawing was originally done with a .05mm mechanical pencil with 2HB and 5H leads on Strathmore 80lb. drawing paper. I darkened the pencil work on the computer with Paint Shop Pro 3, and then colored the print-out with colored pencils. The lettering and the background were added in on the computer with Paint Shop Pro 7.
