Miss Mam'selle Hepzibah

"Cajun Belle"

I was looking through the holiday specials listings at Toonarific when I came across a screen shot of a cute little cajun skunk girl that I found strikingly "feminine" for an American cartoon character of the era. I did some research on her and after about an hour of Internet hunting I discovered that she was Miss Mam'selle Hepzibah, the "valentine" from Walt Kelly's Pogo Possum comic strips. This drawing is based on a screen shot from the animated feature The Pogo Special Birthday Special. This film was made by Chuck Jones Enterprises, who also made Riki Tiki Tavi and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The Pogo Possum Special Birthday Special originally aired on NBC in 1969. Despite all of time I have devoted to finding out information about this cartoon I have never once seen it, and had only one screen capture, one scanned VHS tape box cover, and one poor quality 56k encoded Real Video clip to base this drawing from. None the less, I think my drawing turned out very well and I may draw her again in the future.

The rough pencil work was done on 80lb. medium surface Strathmore drawing paper with a .05mm mechanical pencil loaded with 5H lead. The pencil lines were darkened with 2B lead. The result was darkened and cleaned up with Paint Shop Pro 3.11 and printed on fax/copy paper. The printout was colored with Crayola and Sanford Prisma Color colored pencils and the inking was done with Pigma Micron 08 and 03 size pens. The lettering and background was done with Paint Shop Pro 7.02.
