Miss Mam'selle Hepzibah

"A Valentine"

Here is another drawing of Miss Mam'selle Hepzibah, the Walt Kelly character who starred in the made for TV movie The Pogo Special Birthday Special. This pose of her is from the opening credits of the movie. I have never seen this cartoon, but I had a 56k encoded Real Video file of the first minute or so of it, which contained the opening credits. I really liked the pose she was in in the opening credits, but I had a major challenge ahead of me to draw it: the Real Video clip was of such bad quality that none of Hepzibah's details could be seen. Her eyes, eyebrows, nose, ruffles in her fur, and other fine details were completely blurred out, and I had to guess, based on the one screen shot I had of her, how the details would look in the new pose. This wasn't easy, and I ended up lining my garbage can with mistakes. What you are looking at above is my well eraser scarred third attempt. I think I did well with my guesswork, but without a good quality screen shot to compare it to I will never truly know. I feel that this image was worth all of the work and hardship that went along with it because Mam'selle Hepzibah is such a cute character.

The rough pencil work was done on 80lb. medium surface Strathmore drawing paper with a .05mm mechanical pencil loaded with 5H lead. The pencil lines were darkened with 2B lead. The result was darkened and cleaned up with Paint Shop Pro 3.11 and printed on fax/copy paper. The printout was colored with Crayola and Sanford Prisma Color colored pencils and the inking was done with a Pigma Micron 03 size pen. The lettering and background was done with Paint Shop Pro 7.02.
