This is my very first drawing of Vixey from the Dinsey animated feature The Fox and the Hound. She is very much like Duchess from The Arstocats in her character design. So much so in fact that I feel she was created by the same character designer and/or animator. In the movie Vixey was voiced by actress Sandy Duncan. This drawing, which is based on three different screen shots from the movie, shows Vixey giving what I call "The Look," which is a sort of "come over here and take me now!" kind of facial expression. The Disney animators in my opinion are the undisputed masters of this facial expression, and have used it with Duchess, Nala, Vixey, and many other of there characters to get their male counterparts' collective hearts racing. It's an example of anthropomorphics at it's finest.
Vixey turned out to be very easy for me to draw since she is so similar to Duchess. When I first started drawing Duchess it took me a few times to get her looking exactly right, though I feel I got Vixey right on the first try. In fact, I feel that this is my best Old Guard Disney style drawing to date. Everytime I look at this drawing it gives me goosebumps. Hopefully it will have a similar effect on you.
This drawing was done on 80lb. medium surface Strathmore drawing paper. For the rough pencil work I used a non-photo blue pencil. I then used my Logan Futura light box to ink the drawing on to a second sheet of 80lb. medium surface Strathmore drawing paper. For the inking I used Pigma Micron pens. The result was scanned cleaned up with Paint Shop Pro 7.02. The print out was on standard fax/copy paper and was colored with Crayola colored pencils. The lettering was added with Paint Shop Pro 7.02.
